Cloth Mermaid Doll with Ming Zaleski
Saturday, August 10, 2024
10:30 am – 4:30 pm, ½ hour lunch break
Location: Upstairs classroom (access stairs only) at Artistic Artifacts

“We each have our own ‘Inner Mermaid-ness!’ Not one mermaid is like another,” says Ming Zaleski. In this stitched mermaid doll-making session, you’ll use a provided trace pattern to either machine or hand sew, with step-by-step instruction to trace the patterns, cut, stitch, flip inside-out, stuff and assemble the body parts together to have articulated arms and tail. (Students may choose not to have articulated body parts.) Explore ways to add on facial elements, with Ming teaching you how to stitch on hair with options of fabric, yarn, strings, ribbons or sari silk, as well stitching on beads and sequins by hand. Experience Level: participants should have some garment-sewing experience, either with machine or hand stitching, and be fairly well-versed in hand-stitching (at least running stitch); this is not a learn-how-to-sew session. Your registration fee includes a $5 materials fee for the following provided by Ming: mermaid pattern and polyfil for stuffing. Download your student supply list »

About the Instructor: Ming Zaleski is a full-time elementary school art teacher, with a degree in Bachelor of Fine Art and master degree in art education from Maryland Institute, College of Art. She was trained as a traditional fine artist in painting, drawing, sculpture, printmaking, some bookmaking, some pottery/handbuilding and fiber art. Ming says her current obsession is hand stitchery with mixed materials and art doll making. She loves adding “blings” to her stitched work: beads and sequins that add more texture and sparkles.
