This class is an advanced class for color collage. Students will learn not only how to make lines in color, but also how to connect them by blending fabrics. It's a way to learn how to work with colors using Carly’s fabric collage technique. The class is very open and unrestricted as there is no specific pattern or design to follow. The flow of the colors will create a pattern resulting in an abstract art quilt, which can be a 18 in. x 23 in. wall hanging on its own, or become part of a larger piece of fiber art. During the class, students will work on their layout (no sewing machine is needed). Carly will guide every student in person and offer instructions how to finish at home. Your registration fee includes a $30.00 kit fee, which includes 60 fabrics in your selected colorway, warm or cool (choose below). Your kit also includes a ½ yard of Lite Steam a Seam 2 and an 18 in. x 23 in. piece of HTC Pattern-Ease, which will become your workspace (and stays in the final wall hanging). STUDENT SUPPLY LIST: Students should bring their own fabric scraps (learn more below) to supplement their kit and to share as well as a pair of small sharp scissors — Carly recommends the medium (blue) size of Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect Scissors.

About the Instructor: Carly Mul discovered a passion for fabric when she was in her thirties and had moved with her family from The Netherlands to the USA. In 2003 she founded Webfabrics, and her eye for color is well known in the quilting world. Carly has given lectures and workshops about trends in color and collage, her personal favorite style of quilting. Her book Freestyle Color Collage was released in February 2025. Carly sold Webfabrics in June of 2022 and in her retirement focuses on working in her studio on her art and teaching her collage methods at guilds and shows (national and international). In an effort to help her students find the fabrics they need, she launched www.collagefabric.com, a site dedicated to collage quilting with super small fabric cuts. Visit Studio Carly Mul »

Notes on Fabric Scraps to bring — Carly defines WARM as mix of browns, yellows, oranges, corals, pinks, reds, red purples. COOL equals a mix of blacks, greys, blues, greens, teals and aquas, blue purple. “Any scraps will do as long as they are not solids. Mix batiks, with Kaffe, Anna Maria, blenders, novelty, reproduction... it will all work,” shares Carly. “Bring big and small scale prints, multicolored and blender fabrics, really anything with, if possible, all colors of your colorway represented. Scraps can be as little as a half inch, and nothing over 5 in. large. The more variety the better: don’t try to match colors in advance. Don’t bring a precut fabric charm pack, as you will have way too many fabrics in the same style.”
