Kecia will teach you how to create your own mixed media locket that can be worn as a necklace, displayed as a talisman or hung as an ornament. This is not a traditional jewelry class requiring complicated tools and techniques. Even an absolute beginner to mixed media will enjoy learning Kecia’s creative way of using everyday items, enhanced by stitching and fueled by your imagination! Your class kit — a $18 cash fee paid directly to the instructor the morning of class — includes much of what you need: use of Crop-a-Dile, Grommets, Dritz Fray Check, Batting, ‘Word’ Rubber Stamps & Inkpads, Baker’s thread, Masking tape, Cardboard, embroidery floss and needles, sari ribbon and use of black Artistic Artifacts textile paint. ♦ Student Supply List (please bring the following with you to class) ● scissors ● black Sharpie ● small paint brush (not foam) ● small amount of special fabric scraps including those with texture, such as upholstery samples. Kecia notes “I often find cool fabrics on purses and pillow covers at thrift stores,” and will have some to share in class. ● optional: small photo, approximately 1 in. square, for focal point ● optional: 24 in. ribbon or silky cord to use instead of provided sari ribbon as a lanyard ● optional: charm, bead, dangle (something to hang from the bottom of your heart that can be sewn on)
About the Instructor: Kecia Deveney is a mixed media artist based in the Jersey Shore channeling her life experiences into whimsical works that playfully distort our reality. She incorporates fabric, textiles, jewelry design, sculpture, and painting into a colorful eclectic practice that seeks to inspire others to acknowledge their inherent creative spirit. A self-taught artist, she rejects the rules and notions of fine art in a vibrant juxtaposition of figuration and abstraction with an emphasis on textured visceral works. Her work continues to teach us about the value of accepting your individuality and allowing your distinct style of creativity to flourish.
