I’m in Kerala, India on one of the Artistic Artifacts Creative Retreats coordinated by Aahilya Holidays!

This area was once the home of weavers to the Rajah of Cochin, now providing an income for a small community of artisans, producing hand woven cotton saris, dhotis and household lines. A knowledgeable handloom expert who is working with the weavers was our guide through out the co-op.

Many of you know me as an Art Quilter, but in my first fiber life I was a spinner, dyer and weaver. I began around middle school and continued into my 30s. I love the opportunity to visit weaving studios around the world. These looms are 4 harness with fly shuttles for those of you who are weavers. They did have jacquard looms but we did not get to see them in action.
