Using the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tools

by Christine Vinh

I’ve been working on a holiday quilt using several of the Creative Grids Log Cabin Trim Tools designed by Jean Ann Wright using a fat quarter bundle of Holiday Stitches fabric. I decided to use the various size tools to make my blocks with no clear idea of how this would turn out — just letting my creative mind wander.

While working on my blocks, I prepared a number of samples to demonstrate both the various options each size tool offers, as well as to do a demonstration about using the tools for an in store event. Before proceeding, it was time to document the options, so here goes!

The most versatile tool is the 10 in. Log Cabin Trim Tool Duo. The tool and the instructions that come with it give details on cutting the strips and center squares for either standard or skinny log cabins as well as options for different layouts. In my photos you’ll see my use of GEasy ruler stickers to help me keep track of where I am lining up and cutting.

The pictures give you an idea of the two options I tried — Standard Log Cabin with 1 in. Finished Strips (above left) and the Duo Log Cabin, which uses both 1/2 in. and 1 in. finished strips in an alternating fashion. Remember that all Creative Grids rulers and tools include a QR code printed directly on the tool that takes you for the instructions as well as videos. Great option when you misplace your instructions!

The Log Cabin Trim Tool comes in several sizes. Pictured above are two options using the 8 in. Log Cabin Trim Tool — the traditional Log Cabin (left) and the Courthouse Steps block (foreground), where your contrasting fabrics are opposite one another from the center square.

The 4 in. and 6 in. Curvy Log Cabin Trim Tools can be used in a variety of ways. The Log Cabin Heart pattern (below) uses a combination of the curvy and standard tools to get the curved top of the heart.

Above, the Log Cabin Heart Quilt designed by Carolina Moore (her photos included here) is quick to stitch up with the help of the Curvy Log Cabin Trim Tool, 3/4 yard of assorted heart-colored fabrics, a yard of background fabrics and her Log Cabin Heart pattern.

Curvy Log Cabin blocks can also be used to make a center ‘circle,’ as illustrated in the diagram above when four blocks are combined.

I hope these pictures and options inspire you to try some of the trim tools for your own project. I’m off to make more blocks and will share my finished quilt when I’m done! Stay tuned for Saturday, November 28 for that day’s Facebook Live presentation, where I’ll share my progress and discuss these useful tools!
