This exceptional handwoven IKAT textile from Sumba, Indonesia stands apart for its unusually serene, sun-bleached palette and the striking clarity of its central motif. Two large geometric bird figures — rendered in crisp cream white against a layered ground of dusty blue, warm brown, and sage — face each other across the central band, each constructed from bold concentric outline forms that give the birds a beautifully architectural quality. Bird motifs in Sumbanese weaving carry spiritual significance, often representing messengers between the earthly and ancestral realms.
The surrounding composition is equally refined. Vertical white accent threads divide the central band with quiet rhythm, while scatter motifs of cross stars and small diamonds fill the field around the bird figures. Above and below, a soft symphony of horizontal stripe bands — periwinkle blue, warm tan, natural cream, sage green, and earthy brown — layer in muted, harmonious tones that feel both tribal and thoroughly contemporary. Fine dash-dot accent rows punctuate the stripe sequence with delicate precision. Size: 15.5" x 64"
The overall palette is neutral enough to integrate beautifully into modern interiors while remaining unmistakably rooted in Indonesian weaving tradition — a rare combination that makes this piece as versatile as it is culturally significant.
This piece was personally selected by Judy during her recent buying trip to Indonesia — chosen for the architectural precision of its bird motifs and a palette that feels as relevant today as it is timeless.
No two pieces are identical. Natural color variation and slight irregularities in the weave are inherent to handmade textile traditions and are a mark of authentic handcraft.
Suggested uses: apparel yardage, quilting accent panels, wall hangings, home décor, collectors' display, and mixed-media fiber art projects.
