Few textile traditions are as visually arresting as the Burmese Kalaga — known in Burmese as Shwe Chi Doe, meaning "gold thread embroidery." These padded tapestries were historically made for temples, royal courts, and ceremonial use, and their production centered around Mandalay, where workshops refined the technique over generations.

This 18" × 18" panel is a fine example of the form. The central medallion features a crowned celestial figure riding a caparisoned elephant — a classic subject drawn from Burmese court art and Buddhist-Hindu mythology, representing a deva, nat spirit, or royal personage. The figure is surrounded by swirling cloud and wave grounds, a hallmark of traditional Kalaga composition, and framed by a pearl-like beaded border.

The technique is extraordinary: heavy padding and stumpwork (trapunto) is built up beneath the fabric to create sculptural, raised relief, then covered in hand-couched metallic gold thread, sequins, and glass mirror beads, with details picked out in colored silk and cotton floss. The result is a piece that catches light from every angle.

The raw, unfinished muslin-backed edges indicate this is a loose panel — likely cut from a larger textile or sold unfinished, intended to be framed, mounted, or repurposed. This is a meaningfully different and more versatile piece than a finished, framed Kalaga.
