This extraordinary handwoven IKAT textile from Sumba, Indonesia features one of the most culturally significant motif types in all of Sumbanese weaving — the ancestral human figure. Rendered in brilliant cream white against a deep teal-green ground, a procession of stylized figures stands across the central band, arms raised and bodies composed of bold geometric forms. In Sumbanese tradition, these figures represent ancestral spirits and noble lineage, and textiles bearing them were historically reserved for ceremonial use and as markers of social status.
Each figure is masterfully constructed from pure geometric elements — a large diamond-faceted head, broad chevron torso, and symmetrical limbs — yet conveys a striking sense of presence and ritual authority. Flanking the central figures, cross medallions and diamond scatter motifs fill the field, while fine red stripe accent bands and narrower teal bands carrying rows of small geometric motifs frame the composition above and below with rhythmic precision.
The palette is unusually refined — the cool depth of the teal ground balanced by the crispness of the cream figures and the warmth of the red accent stripes — making this piece as visually compelling as it is culturally rich.
This piece was personally selected by Judy during her recent buying trip to Indonesia — singled out for the boldness of its figurative motifs and the exceptional clarity of its weave.
No two pieces are identical. Natural color variation and slight irregularities in the weave are inherent to handmade textile traditions and are a mark of authentic handcraft.
Suggested uses: statement quilting panels, wall hangings, apparel yardage, home décor, collectors' display, and mixed-media fiber art projects.
