This striking handwoven IKAT textile from Sumba, Indonesia showcases one of the most technically demanding compositions in Sumbanese weaving — a dense, all-over interlocking geometric lattice that fills the central band with extraordinary complexity and visual depth. Deep navy blue, rich chocolate brown, black, and brilliant cream interweave across the surface in a continuous pattern of nested X forms, arrow chevrons, diagonal crosses, and scroll accents, creating a textile that rewards close examination at every inch.
Unlike many Sumbanese pieces organized around a single focal motif, this textile derives its power from the cumulative effect of pattern on pattern — each geometric element locking into the next with the precision of a master weaver working entirely from memory and tradition. The central band shifts subtly between a cream-dominant field in its lower register and a navy-dominant field above, giving the composition a dynamic, almost three-dimensional quality as the eye moves across it.
Flanking bands provide structured contrast: a rich brown band carrying bold cream eight-pointed medallions and cross block motifs borders the central composition top and bottom, while fine natural tan, cream, and navy stripe bands frame the full piece with quiet authority. Size: 15.5" x 62"
This piece was personally selected by Judy during her recent buying trip to Indonesia — drawn to the exceptional density and technical mastery of its all-over geometric patterning, a true showcase of Sumbanese weaving at its most complex.
No two pieces are identical. Natural color variation and slight irregularities in the weave are inherent to handmade textile traditions and are a mark of authentic handcraft.
Suggested uses: apparel yardage, bold quilting feature panels, wall hangings, home décor, collectors' display, and mixed-media fiber art projects.
