Hand-Stitched Kantha Silk from India
A romantic and luminous piece of wearable textile art, this hand-stitched silk features large, densely stitched ivory and cream flowers and leaves cascading across a warm champagne gold ground, with deep raspberry magenta centers and vine accents that add a jewel-like pop of color. A stripe border runs along one edge, finished with fringe. The Kantha running stitch covers the entire surface, giving the silk a subtle quilted texture and rich depth.
Kantha embroidery originates from the eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura, as well as Bangladesh, and has been practiced for centuries chiefly by rural women. “Kantha” refers both to the running stitch technique and to the finished cloth itself. This is a one-of-a-kind piece.
