Hand-Stitched Kantha Silk from India

A stunning piece of wearable and displayable textile art, this hand-stitched silk fabric features an all-over trailing floral vine design on a warm cream ground — blooms in rust red and burnt orange, leaves in slate blue and grey, and sinuous brown stems winding across the surface. A blue stripe border with fringe finishes the edge. The Kantha running stitch covers the entire surface, giving the silk a subtle quilted texture and luminous depth.

Kantha embroidery originates from the eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura, as well as Bangladesh, and has been practiced for centuries chiefly by rural women. “Kantha” refers both to the running stitch technique and to the finished cloth itself. This is a one-of-a-kind piece.
