Kantha Stitched Silk Fabric — Purple & Green, Hand Stitched in India
A stunning piece of wearable and displayable textile art, this hand-stitched silk fabric was purchased in Shimla, Northern India. Measuring 34" x 90", this purple and green painted silk is stitched with gold and white threads in the traditional Kantha style.
Kantha embroidery originates from the eastern Indian states of West Bengal, Odisha, and Tripura, as well as Bangladesh, and has been practiced for centuries chiefly by rural women. "Kantha" refers both to the running stitch technique and to the finished cloth itself.
This versatile piece can be:
-
Displayed as textile art — hang and admire the stitched surface as a wall piece or fiber art installation
-
Used for garment making — create a one-of-a-kind jacket, kimono, or wrap
-
Incorporated into fiber art — cut and use in quilts, mixed-media, or surface design projects
