Make Your Mark with Seth Apter

Join Seth for a one-day workshop (formerly titled Sign Language), creating mixed media collages that focus on abstract but meaningful shapes, symbols, and marks. Very often artists use representational objects or words as a means of expressing meaning in their work. For this class, we will instead use marks and symbols as a means of carrying meaning, conveying information, and sharing an emotion. We will start by creating the background for our pieces, layer by layer, with the Gel Plate using paint and ink. This will be followed by guided creative exercises to build your vocabulary in mark making and to understand the meaning behind your go-to symbols. From there we move on to adding our marks to the artwork, using many of the core processes of mixed media: stamping, stenciling, mark making, and collaging. Through these marks we will tell our story. While we will all be making and leaving with artwork, the discoveries you experience as you explore and create your marks will also enhance the artwork you make in your own practice and perhaps even provide new form of language that you can use for creative expression. About Seth Apter: This mixed media artist, instructor, designer, shopkeep, and author from New York City transitioned from a full-time career as a psychologist to being a full-time artist and maker.
