Sashiko Lecture/Workshop with Blake Brenneman

Learn the art of sashiko from Blake Brenneman of The Red Club Bindery, sharing history and heritage as he teaches use of tools and stitching technique. Students will choose their own pattern/projects and will learn to develop a personal style while still respecting and appreciating the artform. Class will conclude with discussion of Kogin-zashi, Sashiko in Pop Culture, Kisane Tradition vs Innovation as well as ideas on how to integrate sashiko into your work. Note that Blake will email his students additional notes and references after the class.

About the Instructor: Blake Brenneman of The Red Club Threadwork and Bindery is a bookbinder, paper maker, and sashiko artist specializing in handmade one-of-a-kind pieces. He teaches classes — both for groups and private lessons — and has expertise in book restoration, aesthetic rebindings, and custom journals and sketchbooks. Drawing on a rich background of art history, business, and as a magician, Blake combines traditional techniques with modern, small-batch sensibilities to create truly unique, utilitarian pieces of art.
