Handwoven Ikat from Sumba, Indonesia
This exceptional Sumba hinggi (ceremonial man's cloth) is a masterwork of Indonesian warp ikat weaving. A deep black ground is scattered with golden yellow figurative motifs — roosters, deer/stag, and ancestral figures — separated by horizontal bands of intricate rust red and multicolor geometric diamond patterns. The end panels are warm terracotta rust with additional golden animal figures, finished with long twisted fringe on both ends. The full composition is bold, layered, and deeply ceremonial.
In Sumba, hinggi are among the most culturally significant textiles a family can possess. Traditionally woven in two panels and worn as a pair, they are used in ceremonies, exchanged in marriage negotiations, and wrapped around the deceased for burial. The motifs — roosters, deer, ancestors, and mythological creatures — carry specific spiritual meaning and clan identity. Each piece is woven on a backstrap loom by hand, a process that can take months to complete.
