This extraordinary Sumba hinggi (ceremonial man's cloth) is a masterwork of Indonesian warp ikat weaving. On a deep dark brown ground, mirrored pairs of large stylized dragons and lizards fill the upper register, while powerful lion-like quadrupeds flank a central diamond motif in the lower register — all rendered in golden yellow, rust red, and terracotta through the warp ikat resist-dyeing process. In Sumba, ikat textiles (hinggi) are among the most important cultural objects a family can possess.
