Vintage Spin with Dudley Shugart
Saturday, June 21, 2025
10:30 - 4:30 pm, ½ hour lunch break
Location: Upstairs classroom (access stairs only)

Have you purchased a collection of fabric you still haven’t used, but love?  Want a certain color quilt?  Need to sew up your stash?  Join us for the day! We’ll begin class with thoughts on fabric selection — designer Kathy Doughty named her pattern Vintage Spin because she chose fabrics that looked vintage to get an antique look, but all fabrics look great. Then we move on to proper cutting, sewing and the finishing techniques to make this exciting one-block quilt! The Vintage Spin pattern, found in Adding Layers: Color Design & Imagination by Kathy Doughty (purchase required by each student), is suitable for beginning quilters.
Student Supply List: In addition to the Adding Layers book, each student should bring the following —

  • Fabric: 1/3 yard cuts assorted dark & light prints (please see note* below), and 1 yard for the center circles and binding (Dudley says. “no worries if unsure — we can discuss during class.”)
  • 18 Degree Dresden Plate Creative Grids Quilt Ruler
  • also, 8-inch square ruler and a 6 in. wide x 24 in. ruler (or close if you don’t have those exact measurements)
  • rotary cutter and cutting mat
  • sewing machine in good working order that you are comfortable using
  • basic sewing notions (thread, pins, scissors, fabric marking tools, etc.)

* Important Fabric Note: to make a 65 in. x 78 in. Vintage Spin like Kathy Doughty’s (and Dudley’s examples), you will need 1/3 yard each of 60 fabrics, 30 light, 30 dark. However, you may instead bring 1/3 yard of 20 fabrics, 10 light and 10 dark with you to class. Because of the size of the block, most students will finish between one and five blocks during class, so all 60 fabrics are not necessary. You will leave class with all the skills necessary to complete your Vintage Spin quilt at home!

Note: students are expected to have basic sewing skills and knowledge of their sewing machine: this is not an introduction to sewing or a beginning sewing class. Email us if you have questions about this class.
