Beautiful Buttons with Catherine Redford

Enjoy a full day of button making with Catherine! Buttons are a great way to embellish your quilting project and knitwear. Finish them as jewelry pieces if you wish. They are functional too! We’ll start with Dorset Buttons, a traditional English craft, dating back to the late sixteenth century. Learn the basics as you make the traditional Blandford cartwheel before discussing some variations, including a fan-style button and the Maltese Cross. Catherine will show you how to include beads and take a look at styles inspired by vintage buttons of the 1950s. Then we’ll move onto Shirt Lace buttons, a more modern innovation than the Dorset button, Shirt lace buttons date back to the Edwardian era at the beginning of the twentieth century. Start with the Star Shirt lace, progress to the Austrian Shirt lace, and finish with the slightly trickier, but most popular, Lace Shirtwaist. You’ll finish the day with a selection of beautiful buttons, a fully-fledged buttoner!

• Darning needles: one each of size 16 and size 22

About the Instructor: A maker since childhood, Catherine Redford is an award-winning quilter and a popular teacher at the local and national level. Catherine is a frequent magazine contributor and has enjoyed being a guest on Quilting Arts TV, Love of Quilting and theQuiltShow.com. She is enjoying the resurgence of interest in handwork, teaching classes for all skill levels and writing the embroidery book Butterfly Stitches (C&T 2020). A BERNINA Ambassador, Catherine delights in finishing her own quilts on a domestic machine! The second edition of her book, Modern Machine Quilting was published by C&T in December 2025.
