Chicken Quilt with Dudley Shugart
Saturday, June 13, 2026
10:30 am – 4:30 pm, ½ hour lunch break
Location: Upstairs classroom (access via stairs only)
Spend the day making chicken blocks to add to your quilted hen house! This quilt uses traditional piecing methods, simple straight lines and diagonal seams, to make this quilt — no paper piecing or templates. Dudley will also teach you the flip and sew method, also known as stitch and flip corners. This flip and sew method make perfect points for the chicken crowns and beaks — without having to cut or piece tiny triangles! A review of traditional quilting techniques and methods will be taught throughout the day, and you can make a fun table runner instead of a full quilt if you prefer. Student Supply List:
-
Chicken Quilt Pattern by Lorna McMahon of Sew Fresh Quilts, available as an instant PDF download from her website. Visit the Sew Fresh Quilts to purchase »
-
Fabrics:
- Various fat quarters for chicken bodies and baskets — Dudley used our black & white fabrics for her flock! (You can make your chickens matching if desired, as shown in the Sew Fresh Quilts examples.)
- Scraps of yellow and red for crown and bills (Dudley will have some if you don’t have these color scraps in your stash)
- Background fabric: a half yard for table runner, or 2.75 yards for a large quilt
- Quilt rulers: any size square ruler and a 24-in. x 6 in. ruler
- rotary cutter and cutting mat
- sewing machine in good working order that you are comfortable using
- basic sewing notions (thread, pins, scissors, fabric marking tools, etc.)
- Your favorite chicken joke!
Note: students are expected to have basic sewing skills and knowledge of their sewing machine: this is not an introduction to sewing or a beginning sewing class.
