Stitched After Printing: Gelli-Printed Fabric Creatures is welcoming to all levels and celebrates imperfection, texture, and personal voice. We’ll begin by printing directly onto fabric using Gelli Arts plates, layering color, pattern, and marks to create a surface full of history and movement. From there, the printed cloth becomes the foundation for a soft sculptural figure. Hand stitching, fabric collage, and simple mark making will bring each figure to life — wonky, expressive, and entirely unique. These are not perfect dolls; they are character-filled beings shaped by process and intuition. What you’ll learn: monoprinting layered designs on fabric using a polymer printing plate; intuitive mark making with paint and simple tools; shaping printed cloth into a soft sculptural figure; hand stitching for structure, detail, and expression; creating faces and personality through texture and stitches; trusting the process and letting a piece unfold naturally. Your class kit — a $10 fee paid directly to the instructor the morning of class includes: bag of fabric scraps to share; felt; polyfil stuffing, and use of paints, paintbrushes, pencils, newsprint, embroidery floss, needles and mark makings items. Kecia will have several monoprinting plates and brayers to share. ♦ Student Supply List (please bring the following with you to class) ● 1 yard of muslin that has been washed (do not use fabric softener), dried and ironed. (Kecia says “I usually use the least expensive choice for muslin.”) ● Gelli Arts or other polymer gel monoprinting plate ● Brayer ● Black Sharpie ● Scissors for fabric. The following are optional: ● Lace ● Trims ● Fabric bits ● Buttons (great for nose and eyes).
This class is for you if you enjoy experimenting with paint, fabric, and texture; you like letting a piece evolve rather than planning every step; you’re drawn to wonky, tender, expressive forms; you’re curious about using monoprinting in new ways; you want a creative experience that feels gentle and encouraging. You’ll leave with a one-of-a-kind fabric figure made from your own printed cloth; a deeper comfort with playful, intuitive making; fresh ideas for combining printmaking, stitching, and mixed media; a deeper comfort with imperfection and personality and a piece that feels personal, expressive, and alive.
About the Instructor: Kecia is a mixed media artist whose work lives somewhere between book, object, and quiet offering. She works with fabric scraps, paper, stitching, and found elements, allowing intuition and material memory to guide each piece. In her classes, Kecia encourages a slower way of making — one rooted in listening, touch, and letting go of perfection. Her teaching is soft, supportive, and process-driven, welcoming artists of all experience levels. Visit Kecia’s website at https://keciadeveney.com
