Product Details

This exceptional handwoven IKAT textile from Sumba, Indonesia is anchored by one of the most recognizable and culturally significant motifs in Sumbanese weaving — a large-scale ceremonial moth figure, wings fully spread, rendered in brilliant cream and white against a deep chocolate brown ground. In Sumbanese textile tradition, the moth symbolizes transformation and spiritual journeying, making pieces featuring this motif among the most prized by collectors and fiber art enthusiasts alike.

The central moth figure is masterfully executed with layered chevron wing detailing, geometric body structure, and flanking scroll accents — a composition that commands the full width of the main band. Surrounding the central figure, smaller diamond florettes and pinwheel medallions fill the field, while teal blue horizontal stripe bands above and below provide vivid contrast and frame the design with striking clarity. Fine brown bands with cream dash accents and a crisp black-and-white checkerboard border complete the layered composition. Size: 16" x 66" 100% natural dyed cotton.

This piece was personally selected by Judy during her recent buying trip to Indonesia — chosen for the extraordinary scale and detail of its ceremonial moth motif, a true standout among the pieces she encountered.

No two pieces are identical. Natural color variation and slight irregularities in the weave are inherent to handmade textile traditions and are a mark of authentic handcraft.

Suggested uses: apparel yardage, statement quilting panels, wall hangings, home décor, collectors' display, and mixed-media fiber art projects.
