This mixed media journal is a place for fragments. For what was saved without knowing why. For scraps, thoughts, images, and moments that did not ask to be finished. Nothing here needs to make sense. Nothing here needs to be useful. These pages are allowed to change, to be returned to, or left behind. This book belongs to the act of keeping. In A Place for Fragments, you’ll learn how to create a soft, fabric-covered journal using scraps and remnants using cardboard as our substrate; simple, forgiving binding and stitching methods; ways to layer paper and fabric without planning or pressure; how to let materials guide decisions instead of rules; how to work intuitively and trust when something feels complete enough; simple ways to work on inside pages and making an image focal point using resin.(Photos are examples of direction; journals made in class will be approximately 6 in. x 9 in., and unique to the participant!) Your class kit — a $20 fee paid directly to the instructor the morning of class includes: resin for your focal image, pattern, wax paper, vintage postcards (for pages in your book), alternative substrates (e.g. paper bags, cardboard, mixed media paper) and use of the following materials: bag of fabric scraps, embroidery floss and needles, bulldog clips, paint, X-ACTO knives, glue guns, heat gun, and pinking shears. Kecia will have some images on hand for those who may need one. ♦ Student Supply List (please bring the following with you to class) ● Images for your cover focal point, approximately 3.5 in. x 2.5 in. ● 4 in. x 6 in. (or approximate) container with lid (to hold your resin piece as it cures, not too big (you don’t want the piece sliding around) ● Fabric scraps (choose items that you love or have meaning) ● Black Sharpie ● Ruler ● Scissors (both fabric and paper) ● Large glue stick ● Bone folder ● Large button for closure The following are optional: ● Fringe to hang out on front cover ● Lace bits ● 6 in. x 9 in. watercolor paper pad ● small paper cutter ● pinking shears & X-ACTO knife (if you prefer to have your own versus sharing)
This class is for you if you’re drawn to texture, fabric, and worn surfaces; you feel constrained by rules or traditional journaling; you want a low-pressure, gentle creative experience and you enjoy working intuitively rather than following steps. You’ll leave with a handmade, fabric-bound journal created from fragments; pages that feel tactile, personal, and unpolished; a book meant to be returned to, added to, or left unfinished; a quieter relationship with imperfection and process and a deeper comfort with letting things be as they are.
About the Instructor: Kecia is a mixed media artist whose work lives somewhere between book, object, and quiet offering. She works with fabric scraps, paper, stitching, and found elements, allowing intuition and material memory to guide each piece. In her classes, Kecia encourages a slower way of making — one rooted in listening, touch, and letting go of perfection. Her teaching is soft, supportive, and process-driven, welcoming artists of all experience levels. Visit Kecia’s website at https://keciadeveney.com
