Take the Mystery Out of the Disappearing 9 Patch! We often get asked “How did you do that?” when folks look at one of our quilt samples using the Disappearing 9 Patch blocks. Chris Vinh has made several of the samples and written a blog post for us about this traditional quilt block. If you’re still not sure how simple nine-patch blocks turn into a visual treat, spend a few hours with Chris on a Sunday afternoon to learn the not-so-magic technique! Chris will demonstrate the way to cut and sew the basic 9 patch as well as some other options for cutting for completely different finishes. Then spend time cutting and sewing blocks yourself — you’ll leave class with the know-how to continue working at home and have a few blocks to start on your own Disappearing 9 Patch quilt! Student Supply List:

• Fabric – Students may wish to use precut 5 in. or 10 in. charm packs, or bring a selection of fabrics to cut into squares — Chris suggests a dark, light/white, and color range.
  • See the Disappearing 9 Patch blog post for some suggested fabric amounts if you are planning to continue with making a complete quilt 
• Rotary cutter and quilt ruler
• Small cutting mat, if you already have one, to work at your place. Artistic Artifacts will provide cutting mats and irons to share in the classroom
  • A rotating cutting mat is helpful if you already own (no need to purchase).
• Sewing machine in good working order, with necessary attachments and accessories
• basic sewing supplies (thread, pins, scissors, etc.)

About the Instructor: Best known as StitchesnQuilts on social media, Chris Vinh has been quilting for over 30 years, creating both art quilts and pieced quilts with a focus on colors and textures. She makes many of our sample quilts seen throughout the store and for our quilt kits. Her work has been published in a number of publications and exhibited both nationally and internationally, including Sacred Threads and SAQA’s ‘Forced to Flee’ exhibit. She is a member of SAQA, DC Modern Quilt Guild, Arlington Chapter of Quilters Unlimited, Del Ray Artisans and the Arlington Arts Alliance.
