In medieval folklore, a tender was believe to be supernatural entities, spiritual guardians or a protective spirit. They could manifest as numerous forms such as animals or an imaginary character. “When I set out to create my Tender, I had no idea how it would turn out or how It would look,” says Kecia. “I love the character I manifested using my imagination and curated fabrics to create depth, a story. When I look at her, I enjoy the great mystery she carries about her being.” This class is suitable for beginners, with no skills required to create a beautiful soft sculpture doll. Your class kit — a $25 cash fee paid directly to the instructor the morning of class — includes much of what you need: cone, dowels, wire, canvas, doll stuffing, sheet of black felt, use of hot glue gun, and wax linen thread, embroidery floss and needles, sewing pins and use of Artistic Artifacts textile paint. ♦ Student Supply List (please bring the following with you to class) ● scissors ● black Sharpie ● several favorite colors of craft paint ● paint brushes (variety of widths) ● Scrap fabrics with texture, such as upholstery samples. Kecia notes “I often find cool fabrics on purses and pillow covers at thrift stores.”

About the Instructor: Kecia Deveney is a mixed media artist based in the Jersey Shore channeling her life experiences into whimsical works that playfully distort our reality. She incorporates fabric, textiles, jewelry design, sculpture, and painting into a colorful eclectic practice that seeks to inspire others to acknowledge their inherent creative spirit. A self-taught artist, she rejects the rules and notions of fine art in a vibrant juxtaposition of figuration and abstraction with an emphasis on textured visceral works. Her work continues to teach us about the value of accepting your individuality and allowing your distinct style of creativity to flourish.
